Moving Overseas: What You Need To Know

If you are only going to Europe, most of the countries are easily reached by road. Once across the Channel, we can take you from France to Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Germany, Holland, Denmark, or anywhere else. 

 

When you are moving abroad – or for that matter moving anywhere – one of the most important things is packing all of your belongings safely and securely so that they arrive at your destination in one piece. Now it is true that some people prefer to do their own packing, and there is nothing to stop you doing that if you wish. However, we would always argue that you are far better off having our professional packers and movers do this for you. Yes, there is a fee, obviously, but our team know exactly how to pack goods so that they do not move about in transit. 

 

 

Moving Insurance 

 

Even so, you should take out moving insurance. This can get a bit complicated, because we obviously have insurance ourselves, but there are limits. This is because, like all moving companies, we cannot possibly know the value of everything that we are ever going to be asked to move. You might have an original painting that is worth a million pounds or more, or an antique Chinese porcelain vase, and there is no way that we can allow for that in our standard insurance. This is why there are limits on what we can cover. 

 

There is also the fact that, when you are moving to a country further away, there can be several different companies handling your belongings at any given moment. So, we might deliver them to a warehouse in the UK where they are loaded into a container which is then transported by ship to, say, the Caribbean or Australia. And yes, even if you are going to Australia, it is a lot less costly to move them by ship rather than by air. Air freight can be up to 14 times as much as sea freight! 

 

Furthermore, when you are shipping goods by sea there is something known as general average. This means that if someone else’s goods are lost, the other people who are also shipping goods have to pay for that loss between them. Strange perhaps, but that is the way it is. So that is why you need to take out moving insurance. 

 

Even if you are just moving home within the UK, you still need insurance. Some people think that their goods will be covered by their contents insurance, and this is possible, but not likely. So, you should check to make sure.
