Futebol is like a religion in Portugal. The three big football teams are Sporting CP, SL Benfica (both based in Lisbon), and FC Porto. Whenever any two of these teams play against each other, the whole country comes to a grinding halt for 90 minutes (plus injury time).
Buying a home in Portugal is easy. There is very little red tape. This is partly because the country wants immigrants. There was heavy emigration from 2011 to 2016 and the government is doing everything it can to bring more people in to boost the workforce. In fact, the population of Portugal is 10.3 million and in 2020 the government proudly announced that foreign born individuals had just hit the ½ million figure. If you spend over €500,000 on property in Portugal, you can get a Golden Visa which is a free residency permit for you and your dependents.
Living costs are affordable too. In fact, it is the most affordable country in Western Europe. In Portugal they eat a lot of fresh fish, especially on the Algarve. The average Portuguese gets through 57kg of fish every year, in particular cod and sardines. And of course, there is a lot of wine and also, as you might expect, port.
