There is the famous acorn-fed black pork, a wide variety of cheeses, grapes, olives, figs, almonds, and lots of seasonal produce including sweet potatoes. There is a great selection of Portuguese wines, and of course, there is port.

Portugal also has a free national health service, and the overall cost of living is reasonable, especially when compared with Britain. If you like golf, then the Algarve has 35 golf courses including some of the finest in Europe. There are lots of different water sports, of course, and there are plenty of facilities for tennis, squash, and bowls. There is also some wonderful countryside with the Rota Vicentina, which is a 300-kilometre walking trail. So, there are plenty of reasons to retire to Portugal.
