When it comes to retirement after maybe as much as 50 years of working, many Britons choose to head for sunnier climes than we have here in the UK. A favourite destination is Portugal, and no wonder, when you look at the many benefits.
Apart from the amazing weather, with around 3,000 hours of sunshine every year, if you choose to go to the Algarve on the Atlantic coast where you will find many expats, there are so many other wonderful benefits.
Just to begin with, the Portuguese are a welcoming and friendly race, and most of them speak English! The cost of living in Portugal is lower than in the UK which means that your euro will go further than you might think. Property prices are not high, and wages are low compared with other Northern European countries.
Not only that, but the Portuguese government welcomes overseas residents with open arms, so taxes are lower too. On the Algarve, there is a fair-sized expat community from other European countries, and the British and Irish account for more than half of it. Locally produced food, along with beer, wines, spirits, and cigarettes are also cheap.
Another advantage of living in Portugal is that, wherever you go, the traffic is light and parking is easy.
Golfers Love The Algarve
If you are a golfer, you will love the Algarve. There are over 35 of them, and they include some of the best in Europe. There are some great opportunities for water sports such as fishing, windsurfing, water-skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, and more.
The countryside is beautiful, and on the Sagres peninsula there is a walking trail of over 300 kilometres with great opportunities for bird-watching and mountain-biking. The Algarve is certainly at the top of many peoples’ retirement list.
Of course, you have to plan your move there, and at Movers International we are recognised as one of the foremost removal companies to Portugal. Our international removals team has been moving people to the Algarve for over 30 years, and we also have regular runs there roughly every two weeks. What that means is that if you need international removals for only a few items, they can go on one of the regular runs, which will save you money.
