Moving Home? Here’s What You Need To Do

Moving day itself is the culmination of – very often – weeks of planning, and it is all those weeks of planning that determine success or failure. However, the good news is that if you have done things right, then the big day is going to be one that you will remember with gratitude. 

 

So here are some of the things that you need to do in preparation, and the first of them is to sort out what you no longer need. The less that you take with you, the less packing there is to do and the less your move will cost. You have to be very strict over this, and I speak from experience. As one who should know better, I once moved house, and filled one side of a double garage with items that I paid to be moved on the basis that “Well, that might be useful”. Six months after moving in, I filled a complete skip in order to get rid of all the junk so that I could use the garage! 

 

Get rid of it. Give it to a charity shop. Give it to friends. Hold a garage sale. Or just take it to the tip. Note: if it is clothes that you haven’t worn in the last two years, you will never wear them again. Fact. 

 

Create an inventory. List everything that you are going to move, room by room, and note the rooms into which they should be delivered at your new home. You should also estimate the value of items because you will need moving insurance (very inexpensive) in order to make certain that any damages over and above the removal company’s insurance are covered.

One of the most important things to do is to change your address so that you can have all your mail sent on to your new home, and make certain that every company or other institution with whom you do business knows where you are. That includes banks and credit card companies, insurance companies, the Inland Revenue, your doctor, all friends and family - the list goes on. But make sure that everyone knows. 

 

Don’t forget to advise utilities – electricity company, gas, water, cable tv, broadband provider, and so on – otherwise you will be paying for things you are not using. Make certain to get electricity, gas, and water, as a minimum, connected before you arrive, otherwise you will be sitting in the dark. 

 

On moving day, make sure that you are completely ready with everything packed and ready for us to move. If we do your packing, most of it will be, but there are always those last-minute items.
